The Silhouette table runner in Irish linen.

This table runner was inspired by a very talented English woman called Mrs Mary Delaney who was one of the first people to promote the made in Ireland cause. She lived throughout the 1700s and was married to Jonathan Swift’s friend Dr Patrick Delaney who had studied at Trinity College together. Dr Delaney and Mary built a house in Drumcondra, Dublin which they named Delville where they lived happily for about 25 years until his death. She was a fashionista of her time and a trend setter in the upper class both here in Ireland and in England.

This runner depicts the old and the new images of the family as it has changed throughout the centuries. In the old silhouette the  boys play with a hoop. The little girl has her doll ( the only thing common to both images).  One girl has a spinning top and the other flowers. The mother is reading. ( In the 1700’s boards were fashioned to the children’s shoulders to improve posture.)

The second image shows modern life. The mother uses her i pad. One of the girls i has a mobile phone. The boys play with a rugby ball  and the little girl her doll. The fashion has changed and also the furniture. Enjoy
